Young professionals from University of Wisconsin Oshkosh came together on April 15, 2019 to learn from a group of experts regarding their experience within the digital marketing world. The Digital Marketing Pro Perspective Panel, hosted by UW Oshkosh College of Business, included Wendy Ruenzel from Children’s Hospital, Kelly Deininger from Secura Insurance, Megan Mulholland from Community foundation for the Fox Valley, and Calvin Krusick from Dealersocket Inc.
The host, Joe Shower, prompted the guests with several questions following by a question and answer section allowing students to ask the guests their burning questions. The guests responded with a variety of answers that showcased their view of how their business runs through using social media platforms. There was an overall agreement regarding social media being a critical part of business and its ability to be successful within its target audience.

What platforms are important to be on to be successful?
Social media can bring success if used correctly. One important step to social media success is to be on the right platform for your target audience. If you are targeting an older audience you should be on Facebook, a business audience is most easily targeted on LinkedIn, and the younger audiences use a variety of platforms including Instagram and Snapchat.
Oftentimes, you may need to focus on just the target market platforms and not being on every platform. Kelly stated, “push back” when referencing her experience with higher ups within organizations urging to be on all social media platforms. Most of the time, you can be successful with just using the target market basics.
What else could be successful?
Depending on your industry, digital marketers could use the story telling technique to allow users to hear other people’s experiences. Certain industries, such as healthcare, have an easier time effectively using this technique. Wendy shared a great example of this technique that happened to come from the person who lived the experience. The parents posted about how much they loved Children’s Hospital and the circumstances regarding the post. Although, the story didn’t come from them and went viral it was still extremely effective because of its originality and rawness.
What else is important?
When thinking about social media and what digital marketers should know to be successful the group overwhelmingly agreed that you need to be able to roll with the punches. You never know when something will come along that could be successful. Do not expect something to be successful because most likely success will come along when you least expect it.
Overall, the panel enables its audience to gain a better understanding of social media platforms and the ever-changing marketing world. The audience was invited to stop after to talk to the professionals regarding any ideas for the professionals or any additional questions.
