5 Basic Job Search Tips

Jimmy, an individual with a past history that deters potential employers from hiring him, has been searching for his dream job for a while now. However, Jimmy is struggling to get the opportunity to even sit down to talk to employers and is starting to feel defeated in his search. What steps can Jimmy take to be able to gain an opportunity with an employer again?

Well… here are some tips that Jimmy or anyone else can use to help them in their job search to get started.

1.Perfect that Resume

Job seekers often do not take the time to polish a past resume they pulled out from the last time they applied to a job. Take the time to look over and update your resume. Make sure to add the dates of your last job along with using the job description to edit your resume to make yourself a top candidate. Use buzzwords that employers like to ensure your resume gets attention.

2. Follow up After Submitting the Resume

Once you turn in your resume what do you do? Do you follow up? If the answer is no then start! Employers see it as an initiative and sometimes the follow up prompts them to relook at your resume due to your initiative.

3. Go Offline

70-80% of jobs are not posted publicly. Do not limit your search to what is online. Start using the connections you have in the community to see what jobs people may know of. This could include career fairs, connecting with friends and family, or simply going into your local job resource center for help.

4. Start Developing Examples Early

Hiring managers will ask the inevitable interview questions so start preparing now. Employers, 9 out of 10 times, will ask you to give examples of what you did when X, Y, and Z happened.  Be prepared to answer in a way that showcases your best personality.

5. Treat Your Search For Employment Like A Job

A job typically requires eight hours a day and 5 days a week. Your search for a job should be the same. It is easy to get discouraged. If you continue to look your will eventually find someone to hire you. Continue to apply, the worst answer you can get is no.

So, what should Jimmy do now? Chin up and review these simple tips. At this point you can only make one major mistake, giving up.
